Are you sure it is not the coolant tube that runs under the intake that is leaking? This is a more common failure.

More than likely, the intake manifold is split and needs to be replaced. This is a common problem and there was a class action suit that covered some cars. The suit was closed a couple of years back. If you look under the manifold with a light and a mirror you should be able to see the split.

Me and my sister both had 96 Grand Marquis. She still has hers, my nephew has mine. Both our cars had the manifolds fail. Like you, I thought freeze plug. It looked like it melted a large hole in the mainfold, the mechanic showed it to me. My sister changed hers herself. She told me the replacement manifold had a metal piece right where the old one melted the hole. This was a couple of years ago, and both cars have run fine since. By the way, we both had our heater cores fail as well.

No doubt, its the manifold!
