Oil a new lathe

When I get the lathe and I'm getting everything together I am planning to oil the parts as I go.
Should I just use regular engine oil to do this?
I have searched through this and several other forums but would like more input.

Sure, motor oil will work fine. But for my gear, I find that sewing machine oil is a very practical option. It works as well as anything else, and the small bottle is terrific. I even use it for cutting fluid. You'll be very surprised how long a little bottle will last you (years!).

Big engine lathes use "way" oil which is dispensed in an automatic or manual oiling system. It can be applied by the oil can method.

If this is a new lathe and a home shop table top type, the manufacturer should specify what to use. Sewing machine oil will probably do the job, or 3 in 1 oil which is a bit heavier.
