Books on the Mclaren - Which ones to get and why

How many copies of driving ambition were produced?

Retail copies - not a clue. Virgin Books might be able to tell you? I think they did three separate print runs of the book.
For the Limited copies, there were 1,000 with the first 100 being reserved as 'Owner's Editions' offered first to the customers who had each specific chassis number. The leather on the Owner's versions was Connolly - the same as used in the cars. The rest of them, or some portion of the rest of them were covered in Nubuck. I am not sure if they made an additional 59 copies when they created the Le Mans Editions or if they just re-purposed Limited copies? Greg may know that answer.

The run of 1000 included the run of 59 Le Mans editions; mine has 2 'chassis numbers' - the # out of 1000 and then 35/59
I swear I may have had my hands on most of the production run of the normal DA though :iceslolan

Very nice Greg!
Had one of those in my hands over the weekend - it was the WEST cover. :(
They also had an F1 brochure and a retail copy of "Driving Ambition" next to it.
Just wait until you see the asking prices that were on all three of them. :uhoh: :screwy:

I was at the Lime Rock Historics today and I think I visited this very vendor, I couldn't believe the prices when I found these books. They also had GT Endurance 1995 for something like $295! There was a lot of nice books, but they were all very overpriced, I do wonder whether they actually sell any.

I haven't had much time to look at Ebay lately, plus all of my money is currently allocated to a major purchase in my near future so I shouldn't be looking anyway. ;)
That price is a shock - and a far cry from the high bid of ~$1,500 paid by the gentleman who owned my copy before me, and also far below the $550 I eventually paid him. I wouldn't say the market is falling out on F1 memorabilia based on one auction but it is a surpise to see such a rare item go for such a bargain. Lucky bidder!

Hey guys, how's it going? I'm looking for a beat-up shabby copy of DA that would be worn out enough that I could get it for cheap. No inscriptions however. I'd like to have one I could read without having to fuss over it. I'm looking for a first edition from 1999. Does anyone have one like this they would like to unload?

Yeah - I have a copy like that too but am not ready to part with it. I also have one that is in perfect condition, but the binding has split from the cover. The plan is to use it for some scans, but I still haven't bought a scanner yet. Once I am done with that it will be up for grabs, but the plan is to slice some pages out of it.
If I see any cheap copies floating around I'll keep you in mind Mike. :)

a good idea to find a DA worn to use it. If you find it :) please let me know too.
At a point, I consider to buy Le Mans Edition which stayed at factory but I kept DA signed by Ron Dennis and Lewis Hamilton :)
Edit : It's out of stock when cheap :(

It was quite much that what I expected. Didn't knew there is full line up of cars, teams and drivers, which were good to have. Detail information is always needed. Good images and good story of the race.
Quite must book, if someone is interested of GTR history. :smokin:

Well, it arrived today, and its a good addition to a comprehensive Mclaren F1 Library but is a bit underwhelming, given we have been spoilt by DA, Michael Cottons GTR and Mclaren - The cars
There are some decent pictures and some small write ups, but its more of a good thing to have rather than "I need to get it"

It's about time I got less of a hoarder and released one of my 7 (!!) Michael Cotton GTR books (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/270892214125?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1558.l2649).
PM me if you are interested, and I am after at least the asking price on eBay [but you may catch me on a good day and It may go for less, make me an offer... :)]

For the book-crazed among us, I don't recall seeing a soft cover version of the 1996 GT Endurance book before.

Also...
For US-based McLaren enthusiasts, Coterie Press have added the boxed set of "McLaren: The Cars" and "McLaren: The Wins". Find them here (http://www.coteriepress.com/site/COTE/Templates/Product.aspx?pageid=11188&cc=GB&forumboardid=167&forumtopicid=170) if you are interested. The copy of "The Cars" is the updated version that includes cars through 2012.
For some reason it shows 'Sold Out' in other markets, but I think that has more to do with their concerns for delivering these via mail-order. I had to beg a little and volunteer to be the guinea pig when I first contacted them about it. With plenty of packing materials, mine arrived in perfect shape. :)

I bought one of those inadvertently , not knowing they did a soft back version. When it arrived I was disappointed but then quite excited as I hadn't seen one before. It has now gone from my collection, but for more than I paid for it :naughty: but for less than what it's currently being advertised for

I think the pricing of that one on Ebay is a little optimistic, I think the seller also has GT 1997 available for a similarly high price.

Hey, nothing wrong with rising prices... for those of us who have them already, that is. ;)
I do agree with you though - these are different times and prices are down on many non-essential things.

Just paid for a copy of this:
http://i.ebayimg.com/t/BMW-PROFILE-BOOK-TOURING-CAR-RACING-AND-SPORTS-CARS-E30-M3-328-M1-ENGLISH-TEXT-/00/s/MTYwMFgxNTE4/$(KGrHqRHJDQE8f,TBzQCBPKcCeoWZ!~~60_12.JPG
It is Book #8 in a series on BMW's history and this one has a chapter on "SPORTS CAR VICTORIES AT LE MANS McLAREN; F1 - V12LMR"
I'll have something to say about it when it arrives but even if the McLaren content is a rehash of the typical stuff I expect I'll enjoy the rest of the book as well.
For those in the UK there's a copy on Ebay here (www.ebay.com/itm/320841135698).

When you got it; it would be nice to know what images there is of GTR's or F1's. And what kind of story it has.:smokin:

I'll be interested to know what's in the book about the F1 too, I've been keeping an eye on it for a while but so far resisted buying it as I'm unsure of its specific content.
