I have a 98 S-10, auto, 4 cyl recently purchased with 129k. Runs absolutely perfect but only gets 17 MPG. Shouldn't that be a lot better?
No codes.
What to do or check first?
Thanks!!!

I'd say that's a little low. Give it a tune up to begin with. Then check the vitals.

That may be low, but lots of things affect fuel economy. Lots of places have a different fuel blend in winter, for one. Driving style is also a major contributer. Brakes sticking, worn bearings, incorrect tire pressure, tune up/filters. Short trips. Also, how are you measuring your economy?

I have a 92 here and the mileage dropped pretty low when winter started. it went from avg 17 to avg 14. My sister has a 2005 explorer, I asked her what she was getting, and she said since she mostly takes short trips (work is only 1/2 mile away) her mileage drops to about 10 mpg in the winter.

Also, you may want to check fueleconomy.gov and see if anyone else has the same setup as you, and what they are getting.

They average about 19 overall, so I'm not as bad as I thought.
What is considered a tuneup?
Plugs and filters?
