98 Ram 1500 Quad Cab Airbags

I bumped the front of my truck a while back not hard enough to deploy the air bags but hard enough to engage the warning light now. I have a friend that has said the module will have to be replaced now and that's around $500 to $1000 total.
Can I just take out the fuse to the airbags and let it go like that? The fuses that go to the airbags have some kind of locking cover on them. Short of taking a screwdriver and tearing them up to get them off what's next?
I don't plan on taking it to a dealership and paying an arm and leg for a 2 minute job. Thanks for the help. :confused:
