I have 2 NP231's and 1 NP 242. I am currently running the 242, but was wondering if I install the SYE kit into one of the 231's will I have to mod the drive shaft. The vehicle is stock now with new heavy duty suspension, but plan on a lift (3"). IF a mod is needed could I use the camden jiont( double U joint) from the front shaft instead of spending $$ on the CV shaft?
ALso, is it a direct swap out from a 242 to a 231(minus linkage) on an AW4? One other ?. The XJ that I am driving has a solid dana 30 front axle, no coupler. Will this be an issue if I swap T-cases?

ok, first let us know what cheroo model and year you have, most pre 95 don't need SYE up to 3,5 lift 'cos of longer driveshaft, but the best method to make sure is to lift your car first and then check wheter you need SYE or not, maybe just angled packer will be enough to solve the problem
about swapping t-case-ude search mode at this forum-there was plenty of helpfull info about it, if you have front solid axle and planing to go off road as soon as you lift your car, then replace it with any used dana 30 as you will find quite fast you need 4x4 (visit scrapyardfor cheap solution, or web sites for sth more sophisticated)-all depends of what you need your cheroo for-streets or hils

Thanks for the reply ironman, I have a 89 XJ Laredo w 4.0, AW-4 mated with the 242. Is the coupler-less front axle a weak or strong point, when it comes to wheeling?

hey i got same rig,but tcase 231, nice,
well, you need to answer what you need your cherro for:just lift it and use it one highways or going offroad( rocks?sand?woods?mud?)you ned to know that only then you will match lift kit suitable for you,
for transplanting t cases check this site:
http://www.weatherlover1.com/jeep/242.htm
it's about swapping 231 to 242 -easy to understand-just reverse the whole operation
the most important is to make sure your old 242 has the same spline output shaft as 231 to be fit in (21 or 23 spline output shaft).
secondly there is just a tricky job with the wires to the 4WD shift indicator (diffrent plugs-no 4full time in 231)-all in the article
