How do you check spark?

What are decent ways to check for spark without a Spark tester? Chiltons says I must have a good Blue Spark.

A good spark lights off the air/fuel mix. For me, the blue spark works good but I've seen pink work on some and not on others. Same with orange sparks.
Correct spark plug gaps help light off the mix too.
