Is it a tinny/buzzy noise? Does it change with engine RPM?
When the insides of my '97 catalytic converter started coming apart, it made noises.
While under the car, I could hit the cat. converter with my hand and it made the same noise but shorter duration. I replaced it.
On the '92, the heat shield on the catayltic converter loosened and made a similiar noise...I tightened it.

Aside from a bad motor mount, loose bolts on the torque converter or even loose bolts holding the transmission to the back of the engine, your guess is as good as mine. I believe you're correct to run it by your mechanic.
