DIY paint job

I saw an web ad for doing a DIY paint job on a car for around $100; no compressor involved. I'll gladly fork over the 25 bucks for the DVD on how to do it, but has anyone on A-Forums done it, or know about it?
The jeep in the pictures looks nice.
Happy New Year everybody

I'll revert to that old mantra...you get what you pay for.

Humor me for moment: $100 would buy you about 20 cans of Krylon...or 15 cans of Duplicolor.

$100 will also buy you a small pancake air compressor, and a few even come with a gravity-feed paint gun. With this you can spray on alot better quality paint. The pancake with a regulator should be able to keep up with a single gun as long as you're not in a hurry and the pressure needed isn't too high...anything above 40-45 psi is hard for a small air comp to consistently keep up with. But it is doable if you can shoot the car in sections.

There's alot involved with repainting a vehicle to make sure the paint adheres to the surface and comes out looking nice...and will last! Body work, solvent wipe, scuffing/sanding, surface dust removal, and finally shooting it. All the equipment for this would cost you about $300-$400...minus the paint itself (that varies alot depending on the brand and type). Or for that cost you can get an Earl Scheib job.

Being that paint is part of my profession, I tend to frown on fast-and-dirty jobs because you end up just having to do it again while wasting time and money. Quality takes time, but it lasts alot longer.

Yeah JD; I yield to your experience and knowledge.
You can't get a thousand-dollar paint job for low bucks.
Now I wonder how this guy does it. The pix of his jeep look good.
His web is paintyourcarcheap.com., for your scrutiny.
Thanks & HNY from Dartmouth MA

I've had some time to think about this. I would have to say that if you were careful, you might be able to do a decent paint job on your own car for around $100-$150, but bear in mind that alot of the cost charged by the pros is for the prep work. By doing that yourself, your saving all the labor costs. There's a reason they charge for it...it can be very painstaking work and they know how to do it right.

If I were someone looking to do this myself, I don't think I'd try my mettle out on an expensive, classic car on the first shot. It takes some practice and patience. But someone whos got the basic knowledge of sanding, dent repair, filling, and painting, could conceivably do it on their own.

If paint were $15-$20/qt (3 to 4 qts for primer, color, and clearcoat), $10 for cleaning spirits, Bondo is abt $20/qt, $20 for sanding supplies, $5 dust masks, $25 for drop cloths and masking supplies, $30 paint gun, $50 for air compressor rental, $30 for respirator mask. Not quite $100 they tout, but you can see how little in material costs this process really is.

The key to it is patience and perseverence...the more effort you put into it, the better the results will be.

BTW I did look at the site and Googled others similar to it, let's just say the pics look good but digital pics can hide alot of detail and there's no proof that these people actually did it themselves...plus there's more resto work done on those cars than just paint that isn't mentioned.

Food for thought!
