If it is the same as the 97 you have to remove the rear seat cushion and the back cushion. Then carefully remove the rear deck. Then you be able to remove the speakers. What I did was to install the new 6x9 speakers to the bottom of the deck from the trunk, which makes it easier to replace a speaker if needed.

also the back seats fold down via 2 straps located in the trunk so taking out the seats entirely doesnt seem right. the only thing that is holding me back from getting the carpet like layer which holds on the grills for the speaker off is the seatbelt cover that forms into the side interior of the car.

I have not heard of a 97-03 GP where the back seats fold down. Only my middle portion folds down and opens. What Drhardware is saying is that to slip out the read deck, you have to remove the bottom of the rear seat. Then you can remove the back rests, and then you should be able to slide the rear deck out from underneith the seat belt covers. Check in the tips and maintenance subforum, I thought I remember seeing a write-up on how to replace the rear speakers.

Yes I had to drill holes from the bottom, now I don't have to remove the seat if I have speaker problems.
