MOTY Prizes

We're about a week into receiving entries for MOTY, with about a week to go. I've received some terrific entries, but I have NOT received enough entries to have the contest. We are on course for the smallest turnout in years, if we manage to get enough entries to hold it this year.

Entries will not be accepted after 00:00:00 GMT on Jan 16. Please send 'em in!

Now that that's been said, on to prizes. I've received offers for at least 5 different kits, plus some photoetch and decals. (See the official MOTY thread to see what has been offered). Instead of having me arbitrarily pick what kits get assigned to what places, I'm thinking of doing a 'winner's choice' style of distribution. First place will get first pick of the prizes, but will get only one. Second place will get to pick second, and on down the line until all prizes are spoken for. I think this way offers several advantages:
One winner doesn't get everything (or nearly everything), and more people get prizes.
People will get prizes they are more likely to want and build.
It reduces the temptation for me to fix the voting so that Alex winds up with 18 points. :grinyes:
Winners who feel they have enough kits are welcome to pass on selecting a prize
It would (hopefully) make prize distribution less arbitrary and more fun

Of course, prize donors are welcome to add whatever rules they wish for their prizes. For instance, Voyageur has offered to donate a 1/12 F40, but it must be built and entered in the 2009 MOTY. If you don't want to build it for next year, pass it on to the next person who does!. Personally, I think this is a really cool idea. :sunglasse It almost guarantees that it will be won by a talented builder who wants to build it, and we'll get to see it for next year. (Of course if Alex wants his kit to go to whoever gets 18pts, that is obviously fine and his to decide- see above about additional rules.)

So, what do you think? Like it, hate it, have a better idea?

Again, this thread is for participants in the 2008 MOTY contest only!If you are not entering the contest and/or donating a prize, this thread is not for you, and we're NOT interested in what you have to say. :loser: :grinno:

At the risk of spoiling my anonymity . . . . I like the idea. As you said, it will help to align the prizes with the needs/likes of the winners, and why waste the prizes by relegating them to the back of the stash piles? One thing that might be clarified before the prize selection and awards is the shipping cost - not a big deal for a decal sheet, but for shipping the 1/12 scale F40, it might. If the donors are willing to pick that up (and I don't think they should have to by any means), I think that should be stated as well. It may influence who can take what prize.

Of course, the fewer people submitting, the better for me personally - there's no way I can compete with some of the masters out there (yet . . . . I'm working on it!).

Andy,

I like the idea! I guess this also means that I have to enter as well :D I'm waiting for the sun to come out so I can take pictures. It's been 22 F here all week :(

Hey, I knew you will give me hard time about that 18 point prize! :-) I just thought it would be more interesting that way :-)

I have fourteen entries. If I get entries from everyone who has 'committed' to enter, it's still under 20.

Come on people! Did AF members built just 14 models this year?

Every year I have been a member of AF I have sent an entry in. I go in full well knowing I won't be a winner nor get a vote. I do it for the fun.
I don't post a lot of my builds or answer many questions, but I'm here and have fun.
So, If you've built something this year then enter it and have fun. I just enjoy looking at the builds from the year myself. I know full well there are a lot of nice kits that were built this past year. I saw them, here, on AF!

Seriously- what does it take to convince people to participate???

There are more than 40 pages in the Completed/Gallery section of builds finished during 2008. If only half of those are eligible entries (because of members finishing more than one build, etc), that's still more than SIX HUNDRED POSSIBLE ENTRIES. And I have fifteen. I don't know that we have 600 members, but we could easily have 100+ entries. And I don't see why we don't

So what does it take to get YOU to participate?? Bribes? We got those! There are a number of people doing everything we can to make this event more participant friendly. At the risk of getting 'all moderatory'-

This is YOUR forum, YOUR community. This forum is and can only be as good as you make it with your participation. This forum, like this contest, was not created for you to sit back and watch other people entertain you. They were created to give you a community for you to be a part of. So you can watch and learn and enjoy, but also to share, demonstrate, teach, and show off your own skills, be they beginner or advanced. This contest isn't really about winning, or how many votes you get (or don't get). It's about being there, participating. Showing that you were part of AF in 2008.

If you have suggestions or ideas for how this forum or this contest can be made better, let's hear 'em! All that we're asking is that you participate. If you can't be bothered to, why should anyone else??

We're showing you ours, now show us yours!

What a great idea to let the winners pick the prizes!!! We should definitely do that.

Not enough entries? Well, must have been one of the years where people just built less or think that what they have built is not eligible or good enough to be entered. Remember 2007? Many of the entries came from the Super Seven and Ferrari group builds. So: shouldn't we have one or more group builds in 2009? Perhaps that would trigger interest in building more models and entering them in the 2009 AFMOTY.

I think I could bend the rules a bit and finish something this weekend that has been built 90% or so in 2008. Hope everything is OK with this? Everything entered is good, even if it has been finished anywhere between 1st of January and 16th...

Cheers

Not sure that holds. We've had both the Burns/McRae/Parks group build going this year, as well as the Air Cooled group build. So far, we have one aircooled entry, and no rally cars at all. As I pointed out above, there are hundreds of eligible entries. It's really just that people aren't submitting them.

As for the rules, you just need to finish the build before Jan 15. It really doesn't matter when it was started.

We always get a rush at the last minute. I will refrain from being terribly concerned until later.

I can't agree more about this being a participation driven, community building event. Yeah, there's voting and prizes, but it's about showcasing our individual bests of the year, and the sum of that is the forum's opus. That's why I love the AFMOTY so much. I only finished one shake-the-box build but I'm entering it, because it's what I did and part of what AF did. So there. We'll see, I won't worry.

The prize idea is fantastic! That alone should encourage more entry. But a fun idea even if there were not pragmatic motivations. Good stuff!

Hey Guys, I have one coming in. I am just waiting to see if I can get pics of my latest build before the deadline. If not, I have a previous one picked out. :)

We now officially have more than 20 entries. Game on, we have ourselves a contest.

So I'm going to sweeten the prize pool just a bit.

I will offer a small custom machined component for your current/next build. One (or a few) turned/milled aluminum detail part.

Limitations:
This prize is limited by my available time, ambitions, abilities, and materials. We can work out a realistic option by PM.
No drilled rotors. Please don't ask.
This is not going to be a machined engine or set of wheels. Think the machined billet oil filler cap on top of the engine cover.
Some possible options:

A matched pair of NOS bottles (you provide the regulators and mounts)
A set of rear dampers for your Tamiya Enzo (you make the springs)
A K&S style cone air filter (you provide the flocking for the foam cover)
A set of headlight/turn signal reflectors for your Tamiya F40
A set of exhaust tips
A set of accessory/fan belt drive pulleys
Converting a set of wheels from Fujimi to Tamiya style mounting

Other potential options may be seen in my progress threads.

Really, the sort of thing that AcuStion might sell for 2000 yen- but custom made to your specifications. For any part I'm unfamiliar with, you must provide specific descriptions, including dimensions. For a copy of a kit part, you may need to supply the part as a reference.

Hopefully, you get the idea. ;)

And, it must be used on your build during 2009, for entry in the '09 MOTY. (Did I specify enough rules? :evillol: )

Thanks to everyone who has entered so far!

They're not from a kit- just a wheel set (http://www.hlj.com/product/FUJ19155). They currently reside on my Z3.

Gotcha, thanks, because I had never seen them on a Fujimi BMW kit. The 5er's wheels have a similar, but tighter old school pattern. Thanks!

This thread makes me want to complete a bunch of models that I have, which are sitting in boxes and 80% complete.
