Fiesta keeps cuttiing out

I have a 98 S reg Fiesta Finesse 1.3 - I put a new battery on it on Monday and since then everytime I drive it and put the clutch in when changing down the gears to slow down it CUTS OUT!! Any clues as to why?? Its so frustrating.
