It's been doing this for a couple of months now. Idles fine, some power at low RPM, not much, definitely no power at high RPM. Almost sounds like a restriction in cat, but not sure. Changed fuel filter, fuels looks Grey on both side of filter. Had a bit more power after changing fuel filter, but then power loss seemed to get worse after a while. Changed plugs and wires. Disconnected exhaust after cat, still does it. Actron scanner comes up with no codes. I did a road test with it connected and recorded what happened. If any one can look at the readout and tell me what they think, PM me and I will email the file for you to look at the results. One reading on the MAF Flow @ 100% throttle was @ 18.82, but other times it like 118.82, 66.73, 110.66, 99.85, and 89.85. Not sure if that matters, but at Full throttle, in first gear, I could only go 44MPH, and after about 5 seconds of 44MPH, it finally shifts up. It feals really gutless on the way to 44MPH. I was thinking maybe one of the coils, or maybe the fuel pump? Maybe when the fuel filter was being clogged, it broke the fuel pump so it puts out low pressure. Not sure what to do next.

What size engine is it? so you step on the pedal 100% WOT engine pulls for a while rpm goes very high but then you do not feel any torque for a two sec then finally shifts in second gear? your trans is slipping.

on v6 maf at idle should be 3 to 4 g/s not 7.5

you should record one at idle engine warm, but anyway your frame #31 is the closest one to engine completely at idle and warm. So take a look at MAP kpa at idle 686 RPM throttle 0% at that point engine should produce close to 21 inHG of vacuum. Map usually measures amount that when you subtract from your curent atmosperic pressure which is average 29in Hg you will get how much of inHG your engine produces. So if we convert 79kpa to inHG we get 23.41 inHG then 29-23.41=5.59 in hg which tells me eather you have huge vacuum leak or your MAP is bad. Alsoe with ignition on engine off your map shoud read atmospheric pressure of close to 29.5 inHG or about 99.52 kpa.

Also look at the frame #39 here your Map is showing normal kpa. So it could be intermittent MAP.
Also try this: remove that big rubber hose that goes between your MAF and your air filter box test it without that hose so engine will suck air from under the hood it will make a cool sound by the way but just wanted to see if you will have the same problem with power loss. Please try this it will not hurt your engine for 2-3 minutes without air filter trust me.
do not go and change MAP right away record one reading at idle engine warm and 0 mph. Then engine off ignition on record reading.

also if you can tell us what the IAC count is at idle.

The engine is the 3400 V-6, and just so happens, I had taken the top of the air cleaner off, so the black part between the air cleaner and the MAF was off. It still ran the same. Now if there was a huge vacuum leak, I'm sure I would hear that with the hood up. I don't hear anything obviously leaking, so I'm going to go with the MAP answer. I did a test at idle and it was running around 33 + -. When I did the road test with the scanner connected, I started in Drive, so that may be why it's at 44, but at the end of the next print out of the scanner, is in the driveway at idle in Neutral and it's @ 31-48. Now that MAP is the little black sealed box in top in the middle isn't it. I have one from when I had my Camero. I replaced it and when I was in England, I crashed it, so I just had to keep that thing. It cost me $75 used. I know it's in the garage somewhere. Would it still be the same piece today as it was on my 86 Camero with 2.8 V-6? I've seen those same boxes on just about all those GM cars, even the V-8's look like the same part.
Back to trouble shooting, I do notice that sometimes when I take off from a stop, it does seem to act up more. Sometimes it does better than other times. I always get that surge of power at 3000 RPM's. Can't take away the power band. It just seems more noticeable with it running like this.

map looks ok now, how is it shifting if accelerate normally? (not at wot)

try this engine on in P press the gas pedal to the floor real quick does the rpm needle go to 4000 rpm then kicks back if yes that is normal but if it chokes before that then continues you could have bad tps. Tps could have a glitch at idle should produce about .59V and voltage should increase progresivly on the graph it should look like a nice smooth curve slovly increasing with the rpm. Scope is the best for this but you can use dvom. Do not change any parts yet we are just testing now. Also check your transmission oil level and color. Disconnect your MAF it will choke at the begining when ever you step on the gas but tell me how is your car accelerating with maf disconected?

also try this this will tell you about your transmission: shift in 3rd go about 35mph then shift into 2nd and see if you can feel the engine braking and increase of rpm, also shift into 2nd and go about 30 shift into 1st and observe the same thing then shift in D go about 50 shift into 3rd in all cases you should feel slowing down and rpm increase if not you have bad clutches in one of the gears. Change your trans oil and see if it helps.

Maf and Map reading are totally wrong on this frame at 5100 rpm your engine is not getting enough air, (only 18 g/s) and at 100% WOT your engine vacuum is about 20inHG like at idle and no load. It is possible that cat is restricted but you said you disconected it after the cat that, you had to do it before the cat. There is a way to test if you cat is cloged by using vacuum pump and measureing vacuum. Check this site on the bottom left for clogged exhaust http://www.users.bigpond.com/ergoff/vac2.htm

It sounds like I here a slight restriction at the cat, but I cant see through it since the top angles up. I was thinking of cutting it off in front of the cat so I can see through it. When sitting in Park, it does rev to 4 g's and back off. I changed the tranny fluid and filter at about 50,000 miles. The tranny has a noisy bearing that whines when driving. This has been happening since around 45,000 miles. It has 82,000 miles now.
I drove to the next town today and it's the same as before. No power on the hills. Little power below 2,000 RPM's. Power surge at 3,000 RPM. Bogs @ 4,000 + RPM's really bad.
I was going to chop off the cat and put a by pass of pipe there and see what happens. I took the cat off, but it was so loud, I wasn't sure what it was doing. It did spin the tires and the low trac light came on. But the noise made it hard to realize if it was running better. I was afraid the cops would hear it and come after me.
The tranny seems to work fine. I will try disconnecting the MAF tomorrow morning. I'll see what happens with that. I will see if I can get a vacuum gauge to try to vacuum test.

Not sure what year your car is but I assume it is older model that has vacuum modulator.
so check your vacuum modulator if you have one it is possible that the vacuum line going to it is leaking or is not connected or the modulator itself is leaking trans oil....

if your modulator is bad trans will not shift right and will behave just like you explained

I would try cleaning the MAF sensor with MAF cleaner see if that helps.

Your black fuel is from over filling your gas tank! The fuel gets sucked into the vents for the charcol canister up front and as its recirculated it contaminates your fuel. Could also faul out your purge valve in the rear by the tank.

Might not hurt to check your fuel pressure, should be 41-47 psi on your 2002. The black fuel also can cause your injectors to operate poorly. :2cents:

Also test your secondary O2 since youve been running that contaminated fuel. You can reach the connector just behind the engine under the hood. Heres a link with that procedure.

I notice the last couple of test drives when I floor it and it bogs, it starts to have that sulfur smell. So I think this is the cat gone bad. I was too busy today to do the checks I was going to do. I'm also waiting for someone to bring me the pressure gauge to test the fuel pressure and a vacuum gauge to check the vacuum.

I disconnected the MAF and it had more power untill about 4000 RPM. It would not go past 4,500 RPM. I connected it back up and it still ran good until about 4,000, but after a little bit, then it started to be sluggish at lower RPM again.

The sulfer smell indicates your Cats doing its job.
Though you could be running rich and burning the extra fuel causing the smell.
Are your O2 sensors the originals ??

I just installed headers on my GT, with a high flo Cat. Everytime I get on it hard then stop at a light you can smell that same horrid sulfer smell. I know mine is running rich though. :2cents:

it would be best to get it scanned with scanner capable of reading trans codes, My first response was TRANS and I still believe it is trans related.

It runs good when cold, then bogs a lot when warm. I have a device that has resistors that make the Intake Air Temp show a cold reading, so it's supposed to cause it to have more power when switched on. I hooked it back up, and when it started acting sluggish, I flipped the switch on, and it was doing much better. It gets up to about 5,000+ RPM's and then bogs, and then doesn't want to shift since at full throttle, it isn't reaching 6,000 RPM's. When I let off the gas a little, it shifts fine. The real test is on a hill. Tomorrow when I drop the kids off at school, I will have the hill test.
