High Idle?

I have a 97 Geo Metro LSi. The 4 cyclinder. Automatic.

I bought it this way, the guy wasnt sure why it did idle so high.

Anywho, this car will idle at almost 2000 rpms at startup, then idle down to around 1300 - 1500 rpms.

I sprayed some starting fluid around the spacer and the idle dropped a little but unsure of where the leak could be. Also read on someone elses post that he fixed his problem by replacing the "stepper motor for the idle control".

I also sprayed carb/throttle body cleaner inside the doohickey while running. I think that cleaned something out, the idle before spraying was at 1500 then dropped down to the 1300 after the cleaning. I also put some fuel injector cleaner in the gas and ran up and down the road, not sure if that helped any.

Anyone have this problem? This is the only problem I have with the car now...its not a daily driver, actually dont know the last time anyone drove it. Inspection stickers are from April 2007.

Anyone able to help out, please post, I will be moving in a month and need this car ready to GO...:banghead:

More than likely you have to much air entering the TB either from a vacuum leak or bad Idle control motor. Check all your vacuum hoses (look at the underhood diagram). Double check with carb cleaner for vacuum leak around the base of the TB gasket.. Finally I could be stuck idle control motor.

i sprayed around the base and the idle dropped a little so does that mean the spacer is leaking? and where is the idle control? I know where its at on my Audi.

There should not be a change in idle speed when spraying carb cleaner around the base of the TB. I think that you have found your problem or at least part of your problem.

I am not familiar with the newer metros, hopefully someone else will chime in, but there is more than likely a gasket that is leaking there.

I am also unsure of the location of the IAC (idle speed motor) on the newer metos. But I do know that if this part sticks open, you will get a high idle!!

No, there are plenty of us here waiting for you to fix the obvious vacuum leak you described in your very first post. That may be the only problem. The ISC motor is a big plastic box mounted to the back of the throttle body with an electrical connector on the end nearest the brake booster. It's part # 13430-50G00 and is only $248.72 at www.oemsuzukiparts.com

Or you can try tightening the bolts that hold the throttle body on.

I took the TB off. It was just the upper gasket that was wore out...how do I know? Parts guy at "Foreign Car Parts" told me to try spraying water around the base of the TB. If theres a leak, the idle will drop. He also said not to use Starting Fluid although it also worked...fire hazard...

When I sprayed water on the back side, the idle dropped. When I removed the TB, I noticed the gasket was tore up in that one spot.

This should be my problem. I have the gaskets already so Im pretty much good to go.

Thanks for the help, will keep posted.
