what, in your opinions, would be the best way to spend $1000 on mods for my 91 stock vr4? i was thinking of using it all on an exhaust or wheels but i would rather spend it on more than one area. all ideas welcome!

pretty sure you could get stage 1 for around 1g. if not, a tune up if needed. boost controller, fuel injectors, spark plugs, other basic thing, fuel filter. a really good look over by a trusted mechanic.

if your careful enough, you might be able to do exhaust, intake, MBC, datalogger, and brakes (pads, rotors, lines)
are you current on your 60k/120k services?

Timing belt, oil pump, water pump are the main things. Very importanat you do that and if you hire someone to do it that is where your money will go.

do that NOW!!
It's supposed to be done every 60k miles, or 6 years (regardless of miles). Those belts dry rot, and all sorts of things like to go bad.

First thing Deffenetly get a 60k kit and get that done. Here is a Kit I would suguest-
http://www.pricematchedparts.com/products/vr4_60k_kit-1599-0.html
That is the Kit I run on both of my vr4s
Then when that is done I would look at doing some other things like a MBC and Boost gauge (as everyone will tell you they should be done together) If you want to stay on the cheap side you can go with something like a prosport gauge and a Hallman ES MBC. Here is a link-
http://www.pricematchedparts.com/catalog/Prosport_Gauges-433-1.html
and
http://www.pricematchedparts.com/catalog/Boost_Controllers-170-1.html
I would stay away from MBC that are bleeder style valves. (TurboXS for example) You want to find one that is a ball and spring style. (Like Hallman)
If don't want to get out of the car and under the hood every time you want to adjust the boost you might look at this 2 in one.. EBC/Gauge controller-
http://www.pricematchedparts.com/products/AEM_Tru_boost_Controller-1071-170.html
Depending on what set up you pick you will probably have enuff to buy an Intake (http://www.pricematchedparts.com/products/PMP_s_Intake_Kit_W_K_N_Filter-1731-26.html), and downpipe (http://www.pricematchedparts.com/products/Megan_Racing_Downpipe_for_91_93_3000GT_VR4_Stealth _Turbo-1872-5.html)
Thats what I would do..
