Hey all, new to the forums. I'm a 19 year old kid who's been a pistonhead for at least 17 of those years, and I am lucky enough that my parents will soon be buying me a new car. They've placed a lot of restrictions on it (safety, weight, speed, and drivetrain), but after much test driving I've narrowed the field down to the VW GLI and the Subaru Legacy 2.5i. I'm looking for a manual transmission, fun to drive car with a distinctive personality. Though these two are very different cars, they both seem to fit the bill for me. Here were my impressions:
VW GLI (6 speed manual):
-powerful, versatile engine
-excellent handling, good ride, steering accurate but feel a bit light
-God's gift of a steering wheel, cool interior
-good seating position
-ugly as hell
-probably electrical nightmare if it lives up to the VW name
Subaru Legacy 2.5i SE (5 speed manual):
-weak engine for this size car, decent enough I suppose
-good handling, decent ride, good steering feel, AWD means fun in the snow
-nice steering wheel, conservative interior
-seating position too upright (possibly because I'm 6'3")
-gorgeous (in black with spoiler...but I wish it had the GT's fake hood scoop)
-probably quite reliable
I wish my parents would let me get a Legacy GT or GTI, but alas, it's cool they're buying me anything.
Sorry for that long post, I want this to be about your opinions. WHICH ONE DO I CHOOSE?
