Blair-Chirac in 'lively' encounter

BRUSSELS: British Prime Minister Tony Blair and French President Jacques Chirac met yesterday for 10 minutes of "lively but polite" talks, their first substantial encounter since the outbreak of war on Iraq, sources said.

The two men, fiercely opposed over Iraq, discussed their differences during an EU summit in Brussels overshadowed by the war against Baghdad, one EU source said, while a Chirac aide confirmed the meeting.

They had already shaken hands the previous day, although away from the cameras and amid what was described as a "cold" atmosphere, on the first day of the Brussels gathering.

Earlier yesterday British Minister for Europe Denis MacShane called for an end to the self-destructive "bashing" of European leaders from both sides of the Atlantic over the Iraq crisis.

"Many hard words" had been expressed on all sides in recent months as tempers frayed in the build-up to war, he said, urging everyone to "stop the Blair-bashing, stop the Chirac-bashing, stop the Schroeder-bashing, stop the Aznar-bashing, and move forward."

"Because Europe and America divided, as we've seen, sends the wrong messages to Saddam Hussein that he didn't have to comply with UN resolutions," the British minister said.

"And rebuilding a much stronger European-American, euroatlantic identity is vital," he added.

British diplomats rebuffed reports of a row between the two men at their initial encounter on Thursday.

"I don't think that we're excited about personalities," said one.

British diplomats were not immediately available to comment on yesterday's meeting.

Granted, I do not watch the news to get my information on what is happening over there, but last I heard there was absolutely NO confirmation that the missiles Saddam had were indeed SCUDs or of other banned material. Missiles are allowed, just none of "Mass Destruction".

As for the tension between Blair and Chirac, what more would anyone expect? It's not like they're going to run towards eachother in "I've missed you so much"-movie-style with a conflict like this. I guess anything to make a headline goes...

actually that statement is incorrect. there are self defense missiles allowed. after they reach a certain capable distance they are no longer legal under the resolution. SCUD's fit into that category.
