95 Cavalier Barely Starts/Shuts Off When Driven

Hello I'm new to this forum, and have had countless problems with my 95 Cavalier I bought a year ago. Was driving it to work this morning and heard a loud pop, and then the car wouldn't start. When it finally did start up, it would stay running until I either put it in 'drive' and accelerated, or even just let the car coast on its own, and it would shut off. I can't think o any problem it may be.
Anyone who may know something please let me know.

could have been an electrical pop noise! did you check your wiring for melts. if any of the wiring has melted the insulation off then you will get things like that. have you charged your battery? Hard starts could be low battery. did you check your alternator?

I just had my 98 cavalier alternator go bad today. I needed some help with the connector on it. what color are the wires that go to the connector? which is on the left and which color is on the right?
