HVAC - Blower issue

I am having an issue in which the blower will only work on High. I had this problem before an other Gm vehical and it was the Resister Switch. I replaced the resister switch and I thought I solved the problem - a common, simply fix of about $40.
However, after installing the new switch, two days later it stop working again, and noticed a electrical smell as it burned out. Any thoughts on what the problem could be, Note: I have one other small electrical issue, not sure if releated in which the cigerett ligter stoped working about a year ago.

I would use an ohm meter and check if the ground wire for the resister is ok. Put one on a good ground and the other end on the ground wire. If you have a lot of resistance I would locate it and clean and repair it. I would also check for low voltage to the resister this would cause overheating. It may also have been defective.

Sounds like a blower with high resistance causing theblower resistor to go bad.
replace the motor and resistor.
your problem should be fixed !

Ok, this is my second blow motor on this car - also the resister switch. Turns out the issue is that water gets under the windshield collor cover and into the blower moter compartment. The fix was to place seal the top of motor compartment ( looks like they used thin plastic as a cover allong with duck tape) so as not to have a place water can gather. I think the Dealer has seen this issue before - yet they told me their is no service bulletin or recall for it. They promised me I will not have to replace again.
To further justify this explanation I did have a large puddle of water one day after a big rain storm on the passenger side. they said yes that sounds like when the whater build up occurred.
So for any folks that have unexplained water in passenger. beware. I am going to inform all my freinds that own an HHR. Maybe I can save them $600
