System short

Hi guys -- I have a 1990 Honda Civic hatchback, 1.4 liter.

While driving normally the engine died. Attempts to restart the car gave a clicking sound -- the engine does not turn over. Trying to jump start the car gives the same result.

I replaced the main relay a year ago. When trying to start the car, the check engine light comes on briefly.

The battery is gradually being drained. There is a short somewhere which seems to draw about 1/1000 amp.

I have a service manual but I am uncertain where to start looking for the short. Perhaps the ignition switch might be a good place to start?

With the short, I would start by checking anything that could use power, while the car is shut off. Check the dome lights, door switches, how about the radio? Was it wired incorrectly, or is it the stock stereo? Aftermarket fog lights? Anything of that nature.

For the starting issue, is the clicking noise coming from the engine bay? If so, possible is the starter trying to engage.

Just some quick ideas.

might be you're alternator, and battery, you can have both checked at a major autoparts store. they might be able to do it w/out taking out the alternator.

Check that all your grounds are making good contact... your battery will drain if your grounds are only making intermittent contact, or if you have bad/corroded ground wires.

Something to check on.
