bmw 5 phone cable red hot

I've a 2002 5 series bmw and yesterday the phone stopped working and the cable was red hot, I disconnected the phone from the cable but the burning smell was still there, when I arrived home the cable was still quite hot. Should I remove the phone fuse , is there anything I shouls look out for and the cable is cold this morning and the car started ok
