99 Silverado - OBD-2?

My 99 SES light came on out of the blue and I need to learn the code. In the old days (OBD-1?) you could short out 2 pins on the port and the SESlight would flash the numbers for the error codes. I had a 87 Transam and this worked perfectly.

First, is the 99 OBD-2? And is there a way to do this little trick with this system? Or does a guy need to buy a reader?

YOU need a scanner or go to auto zone and they will give you the DTC...then post back what the code is...

Thanks. I went and picked up a scanner (no Autozone in Canada). It came back with P0785. I had this code once before and GM said it was a defective ignition lock. They replaced the ignition cylinder at it has been fine for a year.

I get the idea it may be caused by something in the remote start. I guess I'll see what happens - I cleared the code for now.

po 785 is a transmission dtc...this could be the electrical connector at transmission ,solenoid problem,metal debris blocking the fluid flow,,etc....

that b/s from dealer was a scam....

Well, whatever. They said that the problem was in the ignition cylinder and was causing an intermittent "communication" failure between the ignition and the 4x4. True or not I don't know. I suspect you're right though - they just erased the code and it hasn't surfaced since.

A little research about P0785 (timing solenoid is what it calls out) shows that it could be any number of things that cause that code. So, like almost every code I have experienced in the past (1987 Transam) there are a dozen things that can trigger it. Very frustrating.

check the transmission conector.....this is quick...if you bought this used and you do not work on your vehicle it is very possible it was not installed correctly....

I did buy it used 3 1/2 years ago. It only has 105000kms (65000 miles). I haven't ever done any work around the tranny. I assume on these models there is just the one electrical connector? Is it on the drivers side like the old 700R4s?
