ABS and TRAC OFF

okay lately i noticed that my ABS and TRAC OFF lights have been randomly coming on. but only when its raining or if its damp outside. i replaced the left front hub a couple of months ago so maybe the right one is going out now. but since it does it when its wet outside, does this mean it could be the wiring? i cant really tell which wheel until i get it scanned monday.

I would check you wiring going to the hub speed sensor. Since it only happens when it damp or wet outside, sounds like there is a break in the wire insulation. Also it could be a problem with the connectors.

It also could be the seal around the bearing thats bad. But it wouldnt hurt to check the plugs and wires where it runs thru the knuckle.

My GT done this every time it rained or I drove thru water on that wheel. I used some silicone sealer on it and that worked for a few months, but ended up replacing it, the speed sensor part was burnt up. :(

okay im going to have it scanned to see which wheel it is tomorrow. besides oem, what other brand could i get if i need to replace the hub assembly?

Go Oem unless you do not mind replacing the hub again in a year or so.

well it wasnt another wheel bearing. the code he got was C1216. something about the abs pump was shorted. so now i gotta figure out which wire it is.

DTC C1216 Brake Control Relay Coil Circuit Open. thats what the code was. so does that mean theres an open circuit in one of the wires going to the EBCM or to the abs pump?

It is telling you that your brake control reley is bad. Relays have small coil which when energized will create magnetic field and will pull the other arm to close the circuit it is controling so this way it is open and can not crate magnetic field to close the other circuit. :grinyes: (check your brake relays):grinyes:

when you find the reley swithc it with the other good relay of the same type just to test it then reset the code and see if you get the same code.

Yeah probly the #11 relay in the under hood fuse box.
I would also check the ABS module under the pass seat and see if its wet in that area.

alright i will see if i can get another relay later. i thought the module underneath the passenger seat was for the airbag?

well i switched out the relay with a good one and no change. now the lights come on every time i drive. sometimes though i will be driving down the road and the LOW TRAC light will come on even though im not spinning out or touching the brakes. then the car will jerk and the abs and trac off will come one.

My bad!
I was thinking of the Electronic Brake Control Module - EBCM, located in the left fender well behind the splash shield.
Hopefully its just the relay that went bad.

well the lights stayed off for a day then came back on again. so for shits and giggles i went and had the code read again and the only ones that showed up were for the LF wheel sensor. there were about 3 codes for it. i also noticed that if i start the car with the steering wheel turned all the way to the right the lights wont come on. but any other spot they will. so i think its the harness.

i just went outside and looked at the left front harness. i found my problem. the damn cv joint is rubbing away the wire the comes from the sensor. so does this mean that if i want to fix this i need a new hub assembly? they only make the harness for the other female connector right?

No no, you can simply fix the bad part of the wires cut the bad part put the wires together and put some heat shrink over it, then use some zip ties to keep the harness away from moving parts. Or if your connectors are bad and rusty just cut in front and after the connector and conect wires straight without connector also use heat shrink and zip ties. good luck. By the way did you ever try to disconnect O2

okay i will give it a whirl when i get home after. no i never tried the O2 sensor trick yet. been busy over the holidays lol.

well i took the wheel off in an attempt to repair the wire. and i noticed that the wire came right out of the hub. i tried pushing it back in to see if it would connect but nothing. getting another hub assembly tomorrow. thanks for all the suggestions.

Timken or any american made hub is best.
Thier are some cheapo chinese ones that wont last very long, year if youre lucky. :2cents:

well i replaced the front left hub assembly and all was good until today. the abs and trac worked fine for about a week then the lights came back on. so i took it to a garage and they found 9 codes! he reset them and took the car for a drive and all 9 came back. here they are:
C1216 - Electronic brake control relay coil open
C1221 - LF wheel speed 0 mph
C1225 - LF excessive wheel speed
C1232 - LF wheel sensor shorted or open
C1238 - LF ESB will not hold Mtr
C1252 - LF channel in release too long
C1291 - Open brake lamp switch during deceleration
C1293 - code 1291 set in previous ign cycle
C1294 - brake lamp switch circuit always active

If one or more of the relays/fuses for the ABS are bad it can throw some of those codes.
But I'd say its the wires or the plug on the LF hub is shorted out or unplugs(not making good contact).

Typical with these hubs cause the wires go thru the knuckle and get damaged pretty easily.

well i looked and found my left front harness came undone. i had to extend the wire on it because it was too short and came out of the connector. fixed that and started up the car and the lights were out. took the car down the road and they come back on. so im guessing it cleared the codes that were for the LF wheel but the remaining codes are still there. ill have to check the fuses and relays but i didnt find any bad ones last time.

You probly will have to clear the codes, with an ABS scan tool, after the repairs were made.
