My EG Build

I miss my '00 Si and I've always liked civics since then so I picked up the Hasgawa EG hatch kit. I want to do a striped out auto-x/track car styled build. I have to find some scale 15 inch wheels for it. I'm also trying out some Testors "One Coat" Lacquer I found at my Local hobby shop. This looks like what Testors is bringing to the table to compete with Tamiya Sprays. I'm also using this kit to practice building a roll cage and some other minor detail things.

So I started the kit by building the main hoop and this is what I have so far.

After taking some measurements of the interior. I drew out the shape of the main hoop on an old model kit box. So I could use the stiff cardboard as a template.

I erased the guide lines to get close the final shape

Cut out the shape

I cut out the template and test fitted in the interior, some trimming was needed but I was pretty spot on. You can now see the shape I'm going for. The seats are from the Tamiya Celica SSII these will make a nice street/race seat for the civic.

Now to make the rollbar I used Evergreen 3/32 diameter tubing, it is very easy to bend and form. I set up a jig with push pins and a piece of plywood. The hair dryer helps a bit to set the final shape. Just be careful not to melt the plastic. I actually found it was easier to make one side and then flip it to make the other side. Not an exact science but I like the result.

I trimmed the rollbar and test fitted. Looks pretty cool I think. :grinyes:

Adding a diagonal bar, I'm going to add a harness bar too.

Finally I opened up the rear cargo cover access panel areas so I can build a strut tower bar and connect down tubes from the rollbar.

nice start! be careful of the body's a-pillar as it breaks very easily.

looks like we both think of the same interior concept for the EG:

Yeah I noticed the a pillars are very thin. Yeah I like that interior, I think I saw that when I was searching Civic WIP threads.

Ok, worked on the cage some more tonight and finished it. I added a rear strut /tie bar and down tubes. Also I added a harness bar. I'm really happy with the way it looks.

I started by making some triangles out of Evergreen square stock. Hard to see in the picture.

I then connected the to pieces with some round stock.

Now it needs a harness bar, this shows half of it done

Down tubes, cross bar installed and connected to the strut bar.

I am super happy with the way this looks, now its time to start painting.
