I have been quoted $1000 for new brakes and both front wheel bearings by Monro. This clearly does not sound right but i feel as tho i must pay because the front right wheel vibrates violently when turning. I have been quoted by the mechanic that fixes passports in our area 650 just to do the front bearings, so with brakes it would be about the same if not more. HELP!!!!!!:banghead: I dont have this kinda money, and DIY is not an option! Again HELP! Im in CT if that matters.

A grand is way too much. Doing the brakes at the same time should only add the cost of the parts since you basicly do a brake job anyway to replace the bearings. Pads shouldnt be more then about $60 for good ones. Dont know if they plan to just turn the rotors or replace them.

My dealer charges, 100 to repack the front wheel bearings on a 2wd and 180 on a 4wd. I would assume it is the same thing in your case accept you are paying for new bearings too.

Brakes up front would be 180 installed (OEM parts; just the pads) at my dealer.

No clue as to what the bearings cost. So 650 probably isn't to far out of line.

Are they talking wheel bearings or ball-joints? Ball-joints yes, are very expensive to have someone else do.

Wheel bearings and brakes shouldn't be nearly that much, shop around.

I'm not sure where you are in CT, but a local shop I could recommend is in Bristol, CT. They have done a lot of work for my family's vehicles at reasonable rates. (I don't work there or anything, but it would be a good place to get a quote from.)

$1000 sounds a little high to me too, but what everyone has failed to mention so far is the bearing races. If they are replacing the races too (and they should be to do it right), there is a good bit of labor involved to R&R the races.

You should be able to get an itemized estimate so you know everthing they want to do and how much it costs, parts AND labor.

I did this myself when I had to replace my front rotors a couple of years back. It's a big job. I'm no expert but not a novice either. It took me about 5 hours work to do it. I didn't get a quote from a shop.

It's not a difficult job just very time consuming. You can probably do the entire job for under $300 at home. Of course that all depends on the brand of pads, rotors, and etc.
