Mexico Deploys More Troops to Border; U.S. Does Not

As part of its preparations in girding for an Iraq war, Mexico deployed 18,000 troops to provide security at the U.S. border and at airports and other strategic sites, according to Mexican news agency Notimex. Mexican officials said the soldiers would be used to help prevent the infiltration of terrorists into the United States.

The Mexican operation, with its military component, contrasted with the U.S. security plan, known as Operation Liberty Shield. On March 19, U.S. Department of Homeland Security head Tom Ridge said that though border security is being stepped up, additional U.S. National Guard troops would not be moved to the border.

Meanwhile, the American Border Patrol, a group that organizes “citizen patrols” in Arizona to guard against illegal immigration, said in the event of the breakout of hostilities between the U.S. and Iraq, it would deploy its own resources to the U.S./Mexico border to aid in national defense, according to the daily American Patrol Report.

The web site criticized the U.S. Border Patrol for not doing enough to protect isolated border areas. American Border Patrol has planes, jeeps and foot patrols, all armed with video or photo cameras and GPS technology, which is used to alert U.S. authorities of any intrusions by undocumented immigrants, according to Glenn Spencer, a key figure in organizing the citizen patrols.

La Opinión, the Los Angeles Spanish-language daily, quoted immigrant rights activist Claudia Smith saying that more security on the border would only push border crossers farther into deserts where they will be most at risk. The Mexican soldiers will keep terrorists out of the U.S.? Why are they in Mexico?

The whole border issue with Mexico is a hot topic for the politicians down there. They do not want to get the Mexican-Americans mad so they get booted out of office. So they look the other way at illegal immigration.

I am all for more immigrants coming to this country. But I want them coming in legally. I get tired of footing the bill for people crossing the boarder and then expecting to receive tax subsidized services that they are not contributing to. The immigration policy here needs to be streamlined so it doesn’t take years to become a citizen. It took my father-in-laws four years to become a citizen (and a few years after that his family cam here). Most people who come here are looking to work and do their thing.

Its amazing that estimates have it at 17% or more of illegal immigrants end up in jail for a felony crime. And that does not include being an illegal immigrant. That in itself is a good reason to ratchet up the boarder patrols on our side regardless of what Mexico does on it’s.
