Ferrari F40

This is a new project from me, for a dutch contest.

I use the Tamiya Ferrari F40 because it's one of the best F40 kits in this scale.

http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10027/bcc_001_%28Medium%29.jpg

http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10027/bcc_002_%28Medium%29.jpg

For the seats I ordered some kevlar decals from CrazyModeller, and I use 3D logo's for the body.

http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10027/bcc_004_%28Medium%29.jpg

I'll use some other details like the PE set from Studio27, and I'll use some PE racingharness from ScaleProduction.
For the engine I use some sparkplugwire, and I have braided wire. (not sure if I'm gonna use that)

http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10027/bcc_003_%28Medium%29.jpg

I first started with the seats. I first applied the kevlar decals on the back. After that I clearcoated them. With some MicroMask I masked the kevlar and painted the seat flat red. When dry, I removed the masking and this is the result.

http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10027/motorblok_001_%28Medium%29.jpg

http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10027/motorblok_002_%28Medium%29.jpg

After that I started with the rearsuspension. After painted the various parts, I added the PE discbrakes. I painted them with smoke and than I sanded the disc to make scratches.

http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10027/motorblok_003_%28Medium%29.jpg

After that I started with the intake - exhaust system. I first painted the intake with flat aluminium. The exhaust is painted with metallic grey. After that I added the PE parts on the exhaust, intake boxes and the Ferrari logo on it. I also wheatered the exhaust system.

http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10027/motorblok_004_%28Medium%29.jpg

http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10027/motorblok_006_%28Medium%29.jpg

The exhaust manifold is also painted flat aluminium and wheatered when it was dry.

http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10027/motorblok_007_%28Medium%29.jpg

The engine also got some paint. I painted the valvecovers flat red and added some chrome stripes on it. I also added the sparkplugwire.

http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10027/motorblok_009_%28Medium%29.jpg

http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10027/motorblok_010_%28Medium%29.jpg

Now these parst were ready, I glued them together to get this result.

http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10027/motorblok_012_%28Medium%29.jpg

http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10027/motorblok_013_%28Medium%29.jpg

http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10027/motorblok_014_%28Medium%29.jpg

http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10027/motorblok_015_%28Medium%29.jpg

http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10027/motorblok_016_%28Medium%29.jpg

http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10027/motorblok_017_%28Medium%29.jpg

http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10027/motorblok_018_%28Medium%29.jpg

I think this is my best engine so far.

Next thing what I'm gonna do is paint the chassis. Some areas must be painted semigloss black and some must be painted TS-8 Ferrari Red. On the inside there will come some kevlar and heating foil.

Kris.

Hi, i see you're using the best plastic kit for the F40 right now...

i suggest you spent a little time when you're free to think about how the make the rear cowling close flush to the body.

this is the one biggest problem / headache for this best kit for F40...

cheers!

Nice start! The engine looks good with all the details and weathering. :)

As mentioned by Marc you'll probably have some troubles with the engine lid sitting flush on the rest of the body, so better take care of it before any paint goes touches it.

Because the rearbumper and chassis are one part, I had to mask things before I could paint it.

First I painted everything red. After that I clearcoated the red paint.
When this was dry, I masked all the red parts and painted the left over areas in semigloss black.

After that I added some kevlar inside the rearbumper, and painted the exhaust area in silver.

http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10027/chassis_012_%28Medium%29.jpg

While this was done the engine could be placed.

http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10027/chassis_004_%28Medium%29.jpg

The wheels are very nice. The center of the wheels must be painted flat aluminium, so I used my Humbrol Metalizer paint

http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10027/chassis_005_%28Medium%29.jpg

Some places of the interior must be painted German Grey. So I did that.

http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10027/chassis_006_%28Medium%29.jpg

I also painted some small bodyparts in TS-8 Italian Red. It's also clearcoated.

http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10027/chassis_007_%28Medium%29.jpg

I started with the back of the body. The airintakes on the side are openend and I removed the moldinglines.

Here's a dryfit of it all:

Yesterday I started to add some kevlar to the interior.

This is my first time doing a interior with kevlar, but it's very hard to do I think.

Now it's finished I'm pretty satisfied, but there are still some minor flaws in it.

It doesn't matter, because there will be 2 seats and some other stuff placed in the interior so it won't be visible anymore.

Nice progress its looking good. I thought I'd let you know before you paint the body that you should check the side windows. Particularly the part on the clear plastic where it says to paint it red to match the body. This is inaccurate that painted area should be molded and flush with the body. All you have to do it mask the area thats supposed to be painted red on the clear part. Cut the tape and use it as a template, then cut out the piece on some styrene. Glue, putty, sand, and fill. It will look much better and more accurate.

yesterday I did a lot of work on this car.

First I made the radiators from PE:

http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10027/interieur_005_%28Medium%29~2.jpg

http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10027/interieur_006_%28Medium%29~2.jpg

http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10027/interieur_007_%28Medium%29~1.jpg

On the hood there will be a meshgrille. Tamiya made one from closed plastic but Studio27made a very nice PE meshgrille. I painted it flat black :) I also painted the mesh and windsplitter for the frontbumper.

http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10027/interieur_008_%28Medium%29~1.jpg

http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10027/interieur_009_%28Medium%29~1.jpg

The PE radiators are no placed in the back of the car.

http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10027/interieur_010_%28Medium%29~1.jpg

http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10027/interieur_011_%28Medium%29~1.jpg

Now on to the interior!

First I finished the dashboard. I added the decals on it.
I also finished the steeringwheel. This is my favorite steeringwheel so far :D I used a 3D logo from HobbyDesign for the center of the wheel.

http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10027/interieur_012_%28Medium%29~1.jpg

http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10027/interieur_013_%28Medium%29~0.jpg

http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10027/interieur_018_%28Medium%29.jpg

Now this was done, I had to add the safetybelt. I had one from PE and I had some left over PE parts so I begun. BTW this is my first attempt using PE decals.

First I start to scratch the belt tensioners. I made them from plastic and glued them behind the seats.

I had 3 options for the belt. Let'em hing near the seats, so you won't see them anymore... place them in the holders but that's not nice and I don't want to make these things. Or I just let them rest on the seats. I used the last option.

I also placed some PE pedals instead of the Tamiya pedals, and the gearframe is PE.

http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10027/interieur_022_%28Medium%29.jpg

En nu kon het interieur vastgezet worden op het chassis.

http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10027/interieur_028_%28Medium%29.jpg

Now I'll work on the body.

I sanded the moldinglines away, scribed out the panellines and puttyed and sanded the body again. It's now ready for some primer and paint.

Last week I started painting the body.

First I scribed out the panellines and puttied some places. After sanding I sprayed two layers of primer:

http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10027/lak_002_%28Medium%29.jpg

http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10027/lak_003_%28Medium%29.jpg

After drying I painted 4 coats of TS-8 Italian Red on it.

http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10027/lak_006_%28Medium%29.jpg

And finally 3 or 4 layers of TS-13 Clear:

http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10027/lak_007_%28Medium%29.jpg

http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10027/lak_008_%28Medium%29.jpg

http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10027/lak_011_%28Medium%29.jpg

There are some little dust in the last 2 coats but this will be polished and sanded away.

Hopefully I can polish it this week.

Kris.

Looks a bit dark to me (compared with the usual red seen on F40s), but maybe it's just my screen.

Today another update :)

Last days I spent my time on modelling and especially on the F40. It needs to be done by the 1th of April.

First I did the front window.

I painted the black area, and add the sunvisor decal. I also add the orginal wiper, because the PE wiper didn't fit and looks like an oldtimer wiper :D

http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10027/polish_001_%28Medium%29~0.jpg

The sidewindows got some PE windowframes. It was hard to glue them but finally they are done.

http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10027/polish_003_%28Medium%29~0.jpg

http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10027/polish_004_%28Medium%29~0.jpg

The rear grille got some modified rearlights.

http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10027/polish_005_%28Medium%29_%282%29.jpg

The engine got some airfilterboxes and the whole frame where they are molded in.

http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10027/polish_006_%28Medium%29~0.jpg

Yesterday I started polishing the body. Started with 3600 till 12000 and used the 3 Tamiya polishing compounds to polish it.

http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10027/polish_011_%28Medium%29.jpg

And a dryfit:

http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10027/polish_012_%28Medium%29_%282%29.jpg

http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10027/polish_013_%28Medium%29_%282%29.jpg

http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10027/polish_016_%28Medium%29_%282%29.jpg

I'll take some outdoor pics as soon as possible. The shine on the photo's are not good like in real life.

Now it's time to add the details on the body, like the black lines in the doors and frontbumper. I also will add some 3D logo's from E-jan on the body.

Kris.
