well I hope you get back on track soon. It's pretty slow around here. I'm only hangin on for you.

Here's a look at the paths going into this one.

http://www.dhphut.com/images/edcar_6.jpg

Last time out (the VW Bus) I struggled at this point as I wasn't sure where I was going. I'm not struggling as much this time as though the final destination may not be the ultimate, it is a path (pun intended) I've been down before.

I will be copying parts of this to a new path layer and doing some of the hilite stuff like I usually do in Illy. I'm not entirely sure why but I know that I want to have more selection options done ahead of time this time.

I also plan on doing the greyscale thing and bringing my image into Illy to do things like the Speedwell text on the wheel caps and a couple other things.

The art at this stage seems broken and it can be discouraging like I said, but the careful planning in the line stage should pay off for us when we get to the render bits.

All in all I'm ok with it. It's a nice distractor while I gear up for the next go round of shirt stuff.

Great work to start. I'm one of those that would be overwhelm at that level.
I can see where planning plays an important role in this process.

And thanks for helping to keep things alive on here.

In any case I finally got to some color. This one is really coming along even though it's in these baby spurts....yeah, hold on to that visual and let it soak in...yeah. I made note of something Jeremy Duncan told me about this method. I started to render parts in full on multiple layers then once satisfied I merge them together. When I did the tire I actually rendered over the car body. I then used the car body layer as a selection and subtracted it from the merged tire layers. Really speeds up the process.

I wanted the tires to have a distinct toony rubbery look so I danced a little sky blue across that hot spot on the tread and I think it landed it pretty good for now. Once the drawing is fully rendered I'll go back in and punch some areas out but for tonight's update I'm ok with it.

Interesting drawing technique, I do a similar style in Espression, drawing/color filling full shapes "objects" in overlapping layers. Don't do a substraction or layer merge, instead just slam all layers together when saving the finished vector design as a jpg file. I often use "erased" or transparent objects in the upper body layer for see thru windows effect, and if I merged some vector layers before converting, than the "erased" effect continues thru any lower objects.
But as a PS technique, I can see how that would save time, may have to make another stab at coloring with PS.

The tires have a very toony look--well done.

A tail of tailights

Oh the shame…I had rendered the taillight housing improperly so there was major changes needed. One of the cool things about this path layer stuff is I was able to add some paths and just render on a new layer then rearrange my layer order to fix it.

The lenses were also rendered incorrectly as they are orange on top. I also added the thin chrome lip between the lens and the housing. A little gradient on the side set it off so for now I’m cool.

I’ll be going back through and hitting the darkest darks and the hottest hots again. I’ll also jump back in and shave a little lens to drop it in the housing a tad, but like I said, at this stage it was cool to be able to make the adjustments and not lose the flavor of the piece.

:) thanks Blip...you always stay on for the entire ride. SOmeday I'll be fast but I need to get good first.

The lack of outlines is why I want to learn this method well. I think it represents a higher level of professionalism (not that I'm there at all...just sayin) in the work I do.

I hope to apply it to toons for the time being and eventually figure out how to work it into my semi-real stuff.

I'll keep sharin.

I decided this board has value so I need folks like you to help me help this youngsters and maybe establish a community that fosters communication which will in turn spur growth.

I want Bonz back. I miss Kustom Ace. Where's Alex? What happened to all those cats? We need to fix this. It's a shame the state it's in.

Lemorris--I seem to learn something new or become aware of a new technique with everyone of your WIP threads.
That's why I watch, it's like school's in and I grab a front row seat.
Again, thanks for sharing, it takes time and planning to capture and then share the steps in yours or anyones design process.

I hope all on here realize you don't often find sites where WIP threads are almost treated as a tutorial by the artists.
That's one of my favorite parts of this board that many will so freely share their progress and answer question during the process.

How well will this style work with the printing process? Can you make the seps for t-shirt printing?
I'm so old school with having hard outlines surrounding the Toon designs that
going without line art on a Tee design is hard to accept.

Yep, I need to step up more and toss out comments. Normally I just limit myself to those posting CAR-toon images, as I'm very weak in creating realistic rendering.

I know the basic principles of proportions, perspective and viewing angle apply to CAR-toons and realistic renderings, so I'll try to help where I can.

Agree that much of the past experience has disappeared from the forum,
(miss seeing CARTOONZ work too), so it's up to those of us still arround to help the community to grow.

with this method seps can be made just fine.

There's a number of PS plugin type of programs that will do it. plus there are several manual methods. Some of the screenprint guys I know can do it very well. If this was for a shirt I would send it to my printer in Vegas. They are capable of sepping an rgb or cmyk file to spot colors for screenprinting. They come out very very nice. The Andy Ham design was done that way. One of my favorite shirts.

The printer lines up the screens using registration marks that are output on the psd films. I send it to vegas because they have an automatic press as well and can finely register files like this with no problems.
