I would not go above 4000rpm...unless you what to kill the engine.

4,000 RPM redline? You don't know the SB that well, do you? The mild Grandma Grocery Getters can handle 5K, better factory ones can hit 5,500 with ease.

Shift points on a THM 350 are partially controlled by a vacuum modulator, If yours is defective, disconnected or hooked up to the wrong vacuum source (I think it requires manifold vacuum), poor shifting can result.

this 1987 s10 with the 350 engine is not original ...it must be an engine that came from an other vehicle.. like you say SOME 350 engines can go slightly above 5,000...rpm..

most of these S10's had 4 or 6 cyl. engines..

You're right, no S10 ever came with a small block. However, the small block can handle 5k with ease.

where is the vacuum modulator located? or are you talking about my vacuum lines.

TH 350 vacuum modulator is located on the pass side towards the rear of the tranny. Vacuum source needs to be from the manifold usually just behind the carb.

Also make sure the cable from the carb throttle linkage to the tranny is hooked up and properly adjusted.

because this is not a stock oem as built engine in this vehicle I would suspect that the detent cable on the throttle linkage may be out of adjustment .....
