speaker impedence

does anyone know what the impedence of a speaker would be in this situation: its a coaxial with an external crossover. with the crossover hooked up it is a 4 ohm speaker, but if i were to just wire up the woofer part (not the tweeter) to an amp without the crossover would the impedence be 8ohms? or what. thanks

The crossover will not add any resistance to the speaker. So if the speaker is 4 ohms it is still 4 ohms.

ya but a coaxial is essentially two speakers (tweeter and woofer) wired parallel. so i think it would be an 8 ohm woofer and 8 ohm tweeter and where they meet, at the crossover, it becomes 4 ohms. i dont know if this is true because i dont know exactly how a crossover works but i would assume if it does not affect the impedence( or at least not significantly) than each part of the coaxial would be 8ohms. is this correct

That sounds a little fishy. If I'm not mistaken, a crossover won't significantly affect the rated impedance of the woofer. Essentially, you should have a woofer and tweeter with the same impedance ratings. When they are attached through a crossover to the amplifier, the amp sees them as being the SAME impedance that either one of them is. For example, if you had a 4 ohm woofer and 4 ohm tweeter connected through a crossover network, the amp would see a 4 ohm (approx) load.

that would mean that the crossover itself effects impedence, because if u eliminate the crossover, u are just wiring two seperate speakers into one channel ( parallel) and if they were both 4 ohm speakers wired together would cut it to two ohms. this is where im unsure. i dont know whether the crossover effects impedence or if both speakers are 8 ohms so when they are connected to the xover its 4 ohms... thanks for your thoughts at least but im still not sure ha. its not a big deal anyway i think i decided to just wire it with the crossover and tweeter. thanks for ur time tho guys
