static issues with new and replaced speakers

i have a nissan sentra 03'.
anyway. since owning the car, the front left speaker has never worked. occasionally, (and more at first than anything), i would hear static cut in and out. i had always thought the speaker was simply blown out, so i recently decided to replace it and install it myself.
so. i popped off most of the paneling, to reach the old speaker (as much as i could manage), got the old one out and reattached the wiring.
and still...all i can hear is static.
anyone able to tell me what the problem may be?
a friend of mine tried to tell me there wasnt enough power going to the new speaker, (which i know can cause problems, but i doubt in this case), which might be why...but i suspect its something else.

I would check to see if there is a wire pinched some where along the line.

ypu have 3 choices here; the headunit, the speaker or the wiring between them. Apparently it's not the speaker, so either the amp in the cd player is bad or the wiring between the cd player and the speaker is bad. Does it do it all the time ? when the car is on AND off, when the door is open ?
