Not sure how much this is of interest to people outside of the UK but here it is anyway.

the UK has a reasonably low murder rate but makes up for that with morbid fascination of the deaths that do occur.

This will make more sense to you if you resided in the UK and are exposed to the fear mongering that our media loves to spalsh on us.
If the tabloids are to be believed, our cities are run by hoody wearing youths who go around killing each other with knives and that it is not safe to walk the streets at night etc etc.
There is a misconception that young kids are dying by the hundreds and being attacked and killed by their peers.
Reality is that the number of youth murders doesn't even equate to their population percentage. Admittedly, 42 of the 72 were caused by stabbings but compare that to road deaths in 2007 which totalled 2,943.
