hooking up windshield wipers to motor

hi,
last winter i had too much snow on my windshield and my windshield wipers broke. i pulled the wiper motor off and the wiper mechanism was disconected from the wiper motor. The washer thing at the end was bent way out.
My first question is, its just a little washer like thing connected to the wiper mechanism. Does that just connect to the wiper motor, or is there something that goes on that washer thing to click into the wiper motor?
My other question is, How do I get them connected again. I cant strech my are all the way in there to get it from the bottom of the winshield. Any help would be appreciated.
