I fixed it but wanted to add this in case anybody ever really searches.
I have an 86 1/2 2wd D21 with the Z24 engine. Been in the family since new. Has about 148k on it. All stock. It doesn't get much use since it's a "spare vehicle" but has been cheap to insure and register so we always kept it around. Having a little p/u is always handy.
Lately the charging light began glowing dimly. Using a VM, I had 14.5v at the battery while idling. Suspecting the battery, I took it to a local Pepboys where they charged and tested it. It passed (btw, the charge and test were free).
So I started cleaning grounds, checking cables and other connectors. Found a bit of corrosion here and there but cleaning it up didn't help. There's really not much to the system so I suspected the alt was bad even though it puts out plenty. Took it off and went back to Pepboys where they tested it. It failed. They said the diode was bad. Since the had one in stock ($70), I took the new one home, installed and the light's now out. I know the diode packs are available but the extra bucks got new bearings brushes, etc, so it seemed worth it rather than dissecting the alt.
