Found out it was bad head gaskets

My earlier posts indicated a coolant issue problem with my '95 Cutlass Supreme SL. Found out it was head gaskets as it indicated carbon monoxide in the coolant. My mechanic knows his stuff as he is a heavy equipment and diesel mechanic for a construction company. He said he would charge me between $800 and $900 to do the job. A guy said that was too much to charge. Can anyone tell me if this in line with this job?

Just my two cents but if your gonna pay that much you almost should shop around for a used low mileage engine ,really depends if your coolant was getting into the oil. If so you never know how much damage was done internally.

$800-900 is a good deal as long as they do a good job(with some sort of warranty) and use up to date torq specs.
Thats about what I charge with a 1 yr warranty.

Though as fastmoney said if coolant leaked inside ,you never know what damage is done. Though you can drop the oil pan and check/mic the low end bearings and find out, though this costs more.

I wouldnt trust a used engine unless it was like new, low miles and with a warranty.
Chances are you could end up with something worse then what you've got. :2cents:
