Does anyone know of a good aftermarket source for a nice wire wheel for the Mercedes 300 SLR that raced in the 1955 LeMans?

Maybe somebody can back me up on this or not, but the Mercedes ran on Borrani rims which were the same that could be found on the Ferrari Testarossa. In which case, the photo-etch wheel detail set made for the new Hasegawa 250 TR might work.

That outer band of wires is completely unlike what are seen on Testa Rossas.
I don't know of any wire wheel kits that are quite like this. If you ever do find them, please let us know...I could use a couple pairs for my SLR's.

I noticed that the two layers actually intertwined. I guess I'll have to find a set with four wire inserts and get the rims machined. I'll have to do some serious thinking about how to do the center and get everything lined up.

In the case you don't find this wheels somewhere to buy, i share you photos and the explanations how to make this wire wheel your self. It is not easy but not imposible to make. This are just photos, if you need better quality for the drawnings, please send me your e-mail adress. I send you a PDF version tomorrow.

This is a picture of Ferrari 166MM Barchetta 1949 LeMans winner by MFH. It's the closest I've seen. http://islandcollectibles.net/mfh/mfh2440bltb.jpg

I have decided I will be going with the Boranni 16 inch wheels. They used Continentel (sp?) tires so I'll have to sand the side walls, but that's where I'll be going with it. Now to save up some money so I can start soon.
