I'm not sure what level you want to gain an understanding of. Have you visited www.howstuffworks.com and some of the links there?

An engine overhaul manual will help a lot. Haynes, Chilton, Bentley, HP techbooks. The first three will give you lots of in-depth text with some small grainy black and white photos. The last one will give you overviews in text and huge glossy color photos. Both are valuable since the first shows how to do a stock rebuild. The second shows performance mods, engine specifics, and other things not contained in the shop manual.

Some of the BEST engine building advice I ever read came from HP Books "How to Rebuild your Small Block Ford". It discussed in detail many rebuilding techniques, theory and related mechanical work that applies to ALL engines (especially OHV configurations) regardless of manufacturer.

Look in book stores for car books by Peterson (sp?). They used to have a lot of "how to hot rod your Chevy, Ford, etc" books and were very reasonably priced.
