I wasn't intending to ridicule you...I was trying to lighten the tone of your seriously unhappy over-reaction. I still can't understand how anyone can look at work like this and make the results sound so disappointing that they sadden you...well...:uhoh: Had the banter been going back and forth in person it wouldn't have been something that would have gone anywhere near this far.

It wasn't my intention to make the results disappointing, I really like the finish he got on that CF decal job.

Let's put this behind us and enjoy the progress of this build, which I'm sure it will be fabulous. :)

What is quite clear from all of the comments post stripe, and whether you agree or disagree, is that the members on this forum care very passionately about the hobby!! :)

Great work Dave.

i think the "problem" is that the weave effect isn't to scale and that to scale weave is virtually invisible.

Yep, your are 100% right. If the weave was truly in scale, it would look like a dirty paint job, and printers would not be able to print a clean sheet, you would end up with a lot of wasted sheets and flaws. I like the pattern being visible so I look past the "true scale"aspect.

Speechless on the awesomeness factor of this one as well, Dave!

Counting down for more progress...

What patience! What skill! What mastery! All of that work! The nose - how many surfaces there are and then the seam work is spot on, too. Then the seam on the tail and all the vents - that is just superb!! This is going to be a show stopper when finished for sure!

Excellent work so far Dave. I love the deep finish the 2K has given the decals and i am pro the strip, it adds to the look of the car and as also said it hides the join line well. Please post more.

Small update on this one. Undercarriage carbon is in process. I added SMS Twill weave, one coat of Urethane clear and once dry I added pro tech .020 PE bolts in all the molded in locations.....

y'know, I'm not sure I'm a fan of the type of clear you're using.
For some reason, whenever I see a photo of that sort of clear (is it the same as the 2K clears) it looks too thick.

Could just be down the photography or even because in this case, I'm too used to seeing a smoked clear on CF decals.

Or maybe it's because it is too shiney?

:dunno: photos just don't look right.

It is 2k clear. Dupont to be exact.... I hear this all the time.... nothing I am not used to.... I use 2K clear because its high solid content. It will outlast any lacquer paint job out there.... Lacquer will shrink... then when you polish it it will shrink again over time.... I am not a fan of that. I will take the thickness over that any day. Not a fan? Not your model plain and simple. But I do appreciate the feedback!

Thanks,

DaveT

With the holiday pretty much behind I decided to get back on JT's FXX.

The wheels were converted to be removable with all turned aluminum collars and threaded nuts.

http://images48.fotki.com/v1406/photos/3/335511/6980133/P1010089-vi.jpg

Once the conversion was complete the wheels were primed, painted and decaled.

http://images47.fotki.com/v1400/photos/3/335511/6980133/P1010095-vi.jpg

All the tedious carbon fiber application using Scale motorsport high def was applied to the interior tub and cleared with 2-3 coats of future thru the airbrush. Seats were also installed at this time.

http://images48.fotki.com/v1405/photos/3/335511/6980133/P1010091-vi.jpg

The monocoque chassis was primed, shot with krylon semi gloss black and sides were carbon decaled again with high def decal and future.

http://images43.fotki.com/v1385/photos/3/335511/6980133/P1010093-vi.jpg

Rear fire wall and sides were covered in cigarette foil made from templates and applied with white glue.

http://images43.fotki.com/v1385/photos/3/335511/6980133/P1010092-vi.jpg

Here is the engine bay ready for the powerplant.

http://images46.fotki.com/v1432/photos/3/335511/6980133/P1010098-vi.jpg

The overflow tank is provided in the superkit. Much nicer than the kit piece!

http://images46.fotki.com/v1413/photos/3/335511/6980133/P1010099-vi.jpg

Rear side panels and fenders are complete. The chassis brackets are PE units from the Superkit.

http://images42.fotki.com/v1374/photos/3/335511/6980133/P1010096-vi.jpg

Inner door panels were Cf'ed with Hi def and Twill weave cleared with 2 part clear.

Dash was carefully covered in correct areas with Hi def and 3 coats of future applied.

http://images48.fotki.com/v1409/photos/3/335511/6980133/P1010100-vi.jpg

Here are a few mockups with panels in place to test fit and for motivation!!

This, the all encompassing-all bare carbon FXX, is probably the most challenging to finish. Frustrating! You seem to have a hold on it tho, without any problems at all. I hate you!! hah! J/k. It is amazing what you are doing! How much did you have to spend on this so far? In the $200s? I would think a well deserved price for all that you are putting into this. Keep up the great work!!

The only money I have invested in this is the kit itself. I am using the SMS kit doing a basic extended review of it and how to apply it to the Tamiya kit for Model Cars Magazine. It will be in one of the upcoming issues.

I cannot see why you would refer to the Porsche wheel nuts in realtion to a Ferrari???

Because some people think they gotta find something wrong Shayne... :grinno:

I got alot done in the last few days off for New Years.

Here is a sample of the beautiful brake assemblies in the kit. They are so detailed..... I shot the rotors with Tamiya Metallic grey to simulate carbon material.

http://images46.fotki.com/v1415/photos/3/335511/6980133/P1010001-vi.jpg

Engine is also far along...... A run down here:

Block was airbrushed Tamiya Flat aluminum at low PSI to get the "cast" look. Valve covers were treated with Krylon "Suede it" paint for texture, then primed White, sprayed bright red, followed by testors dullcoat. The heat shield and fuel rail is PE from the SMS kit. I added all the plug lines using protech wire. Look at the brake detail on the rotors!

http://images42.fotki.com/v1373/photos/3/335511/6980133/P1010002-vi.jpg

The exhaust was heat stained very heavily using Tamiya gloss black out of the can, Alclad chrome, copper, pale gold and Tamiya clear acrylics... I also added the O2 sensor lines and plugs. The blue coolant lines were added as well using Protech hose and detailmaster hardline.

http://images43.fotki.com/v1385/photos/3/335511/6980133/P1010003-vi.jpg

The air intake is very visible on the engine top and really sets the bay off. I was very careful to get it right. Again Krylon suede it was used for the texture followed by Krylon ultra flat black. Then the red ribs are PE pieces painted red provided in the SMS kit. Ferrari logos are metal transfers from the tamiya kit. I topped it off with a oil cap from sakastsu and BMF clamps.

http://images45.fotki.com/v1361/photos/3/335511/6980133/P1010005-vi.jpg

Here it is in position.

Dave,

I take my hat off and bow down in disbelief, that is f****ing amazing what you've done so far.

I just received my FXX today from Hong Kong and also found the SMS kit for this model, although rather expensive for the Czech Republic since it'll come from the U.S. What I can't understand though is how you managed the photo etching, I've ordered a photo etching kit from crazy modeler, but I have to admit, that I've never used photo etched parts before and am a little scared doing so. I've done some studying on the net, but do you have some special tips and tricks, like glueing the tiny parts, meaning around the windows or on the underpanel, bending and shaping the photo etched parts, etc etc.

If you want to, please mail me at: martin.mikula@yahoo.com
Thanks a lot, Martin

All the race cars use red wheel nuts on one side and blue on the other side!
It is because the thread is different for left side nuts from those on the right side, for the obvious reason.

And the FXX being a track (race) car his reasoning was very sound, no need to attack him. :shakehead

Back to the build, awesome looking engine, especially the heat stains on the exhaust!

The engine is in place in the monocoque. The intake is sitting there for a test fit. Still have lots to do to tidy this area up

Front area is complete. I did not go crazy, basically a little CF, Kit instruction painting is all that is needed. The bonnett will not be shown once the car is complete but I still wanted it to be clean.
