Oil Usage

I bought a used '92 with 97,000 actual miles about a year-and-a-half ago. I check the oil level weekly and have never noticed any loss of oil until the last few weeks. It now goes through about a quart every 750 miles. I pulled away from a light the other day and noticed a puff of blue smoke out the exhaust so I know it's burning it. I understand the valve stem seals are notoriously prone to wear, but is it possible for them to fail so suddenly? I'd be interested in your comments. Thank you.

It could be that only one seal went bad and if that is the case one quart in 750 miles is not bad.
