OK stick with me on this one!
Got the vehicle and it did not run, replaced the fuel pump and fuel filter.
vehicle started and idled fine after replacement of these parts.
as i took off down the road evertything was fine except when i floor it it spits and sputters and falls on its face. there was about 3/4 of a tank in it so i drove it around town for a few days to get rid of all the gas to rule out that it was the fuel. then after about 2 days i drove it about 20 miles shut it off and cameback to it 10 min later and it wouldnt start, i let it sit for about 20 min and then it fired up and ran fine(except when at full throttle )
so i ran all the fuel out of it and put in some fuel treatmant stuff and filled the tank. and ive gone through that whole tank and now the problem is more frequent. if it sits for a half hour or more it will start up and run but if i start it and drive it and shut if off it wont start back up with out letting it sit for a while. and once in a great while the check engine light will come on while im driving it and stay on for about 30 seconds....
the other day i drove it around and pulled it into garage and shut it off, i tried restarting it and it wouldnt...i pulled off the fuel line after the fuel filter and turned the key forward and its def getting fuel to that point
then i turned it over and pushed the lil valve checker thingy (schroeder valve?) on the fuelrail and there was fuel there.....so then i disconnected what i think is the fuel return line up by the fuel rail and no fuel coming back...even while idling......
so what you guys/gals thinking?
im thinking maybe fuel pressure regulator?
thanks for your help!

Check the codes to see why the check engine light came on. Let us know what the code is.

the check engine light only comes on once in a great while for a few seconds while im driving, by the time i get back to my garage iits off and there are no codes.....

If the light came on, there should be codes stored. Are you checking the KOEO and KOER codes? Are you using the paperclip/CEL method or a scan tool to check the codes?

If what you're using basically just shorts the STI to ground and you're reading the code from a check engine light, then you may not be able to access codes that are not currently active. You might see if any of the local parts stores have a "scan tool" not just a "code reader" to check the EEC system for stored codes.

So where would a guy check the codes for the OBD 1
I tried plugging into the OBD 2 connection and appearntly its not OBD2....

The EEC connector is located under the hood, near one of the strut towers. It will look like the connector waaaay at the bottom of this site. (http://autorepair.about.com/cs/troubleshooting/l/bl_dtcs_70a.htm)

ok we checked the codes with a piece of wire and by the check engine light blinking and all we got were like sensor out of reach codes and just piddly stuff . so I am back to square one and i have no clue what to even try anymore. put in a new fuel presure regulator and that wasnt it either. so ya any ideas would be greatly appreciated. thanks

You had codes for sensors out of range and you think that puts you back at square one? What were the codes, by number? If they had to do with EGR, DPFE, IAC, MAP, ECT, they could certainly be related to your idle problems.
If you want the forum to provide help, you need to help us by providing as much information as you can. Specific codes would be invaluable to helping you.

they were none of those. i ll look what EXACTLY they were and let u know
we tested the fuel pressure on the fuel rail and had 5 psi.....pulled the pump and sending unit and the plastic for the sending unit wher the pump sits in was cracked so it wasnt all sealled tightly. i readjusted and put it back in, now while it idles i get about 30 psi...it runs way better but sometimes has a problem starting back up after just shutting it off
so i am wondering what the optimal fuel pressure should be for idling?
and i ordered a new complete sending unit also
