I own a 1982 Tercel, the last of the first generation (1978-1982)
I bought it for $600 (this included a ski rack and a cover, or else I'd have not paid so much) It's my parts getter/everyday vehicle, and returns about 45mpg!
The horn is the most non-threatening I've ever heard, but at the same time it doesn't really sound goofy either. And it's slow - very slow, only a hint faster than my 360. I can floor it, and still be beaten a minivan.

Too bad you've got two '89s. In 1987 the tercel got a mechanical makeover, which included a transverse mounted engine, the original tercels had the engine mounted front to back, like in a rear wheel drive car, the gear box is behind the engine and the diff is under the engine! This actually gives the car very neutral handling, something unusual for old front wheel drives cars (don't lift your foot off the accelerator going around a turn in a BMC mini!)
