Scanner for my grand prix

I have a 01 grand prix gt 3.8n.s
I was wondering if ANYBODY knows were i can purchase a transmission capable scanner for less than 300. I dont care what brand i am jsut curious. The shop that did my tranny work told me theres cost about 5300 does that seem right?:screwy:

yeah, tech 2's or snapon scanners run about that.

yup, any tech II scanner runs around $5000

you might be able to find a used one for around $3000 but good luck...

It would help to explain what level of diagnostics you want to perform on the transaxle? To check TCC apply, pressure control and shift timing, etc. you need a GM Tech 2 which means a trip to the GM dealership since obviously the cost of owning one is too expensive unless you are a full time independent auto tech or a shop.

As to just reading out DTCs like a code reader any odb-ii scan tool which has GM manufacturer specific or extended DTC programming can read out the codes which will be both generic in nature (P0XXX) or extended like P1XXX. My Actron scanner will detect and retrieve the extended GM codes like P1810, P1811, P1860, P1887, etc. which are specific to the transaxle.

I use alex peppers scan tool at home. Has little confusing layout but it works great. You need a laptop or desktop for the software.

That's what I have and I agree about the confusion. Does seem to be a good little scan tool but I wish I knew more of what it will do and how to use it better. Mr. Pepers resume is really impressive.

$5000? Where did you get that price from? My teacher at my automotive school has his own snap on scanner & vantage and he said the vantage was around $2500 and the scanner was $2000. If they really are $5000 he must of got some crazy ass discount then.

Good high end end scan tools can cost $5K or more. One of the replies was referring to the GM Tech 2 scan tool which costs that much. Of all the scan tools hard to beat it for what it does but for most us it is wishful thinking owning one. Different story if you are a professional auto tech with your own business servicing GM cars.
