Hello,
I have a 1996 lumina with a 3.1. The problem started a few days ago when I would start car it seemed like the soleniod was sticking or not functioning.
When I turned on the key the ignition lights all came on but would not crank over. I left the key on and opened the hood and used a jumper wire to manually engage the soleniod. It cranked over and started. After that it worked like two times with the key but sounded like the battery was low.
Then it stopped working once again so I tried manually enagaging soleniod and it stuck enagage and engine started. I hit the accelerator to kick the gear out of flywheel and drove home. I pulled the started and replaced the solenoid and starter was tested good. After replacing the starter I have NOTHING when I turn key forward or backward to ACC. I tested the two fuse links at the starter and they are fine. I have BATTERY power inside that works the horn, power locks, dome light, headlights are also fine.
I tested both fuse blocks under the hood and all mains are good.
Could this be caused by a defective ignition switch? I can see the rod moves the switch when key is turned. Any ideas? PS Where could I obtain a schematic so I can test electrically without the need to tear everything apart?
Any help would be great cause I am only working 2 days a week so money is tight and cannot afford a shop bill.
Thanks many times over for any help anyone can give me.
Pat

I have NO power in vehicle also,, when I turn key on there is nothing,, Engine lights do NOT come on, no blinkers no wiper no radio anything that runs off the accessory feed is dead along with it not cranking over. I checked all under the hood fuses and links and they are good. I have the steering collum dropped down and I can jump across terminals and get power and jump to the solenoid and get car started. So I guess all I need is a pin diag so I can test out the switch or back trace issue. I am thinking the ign switch is bad but at 100+ dollars would like to know for sure before I buy a non refundable part.
I bought a chilton and the wire colors do NOT match my car GRRRRR.
Another non refund item
Any help would be great,
Thanks for your comment

Go to http://www.alldata.com/ buy a years subscription. Appx. $25.00
They have good wiring diagrams.
Some of these vehicles have fuseable links by the starter solenoid. The newer ones have a control center by the strut tower. Check for something blown or melted if by the starter.
Alldata has very good electrical diagrams which you will need if tracking down electrical problems.
