I use alot of MCW paints. When i spray clear over the neon red it dries rough. Even with several coats of clear it never seems to gloss. I build many McLaren & Penske Marlboro models. What's up with this stuff?

Welcome to AF!

We really can't tell you what the problem is without more information. It could be any number of things- possibly incompatible clearcoat or improper technique, but it could be something else. If you can tell us everything about what you're using and how you're using it, we may be able to help.

I have used several of MCW paints with clear coats from MCW and Ultraclear from (can't think of their name, Out of Business anyway) and I now have acrylic laquer clear from PPG. No problems with any of those clear coats.
One bit of advice from MCW is do not mist the paint, I found out why. It dries in the air and balls up on the model. More so with neon paints. The real problem with MCW neons I think they are too thin. But at any rate, by the time I have finished with their neons, they are smooth before clearcoat.

Flourescent(Neon)paints are very flat, and flat paints soak up allot of clear coat before they start to shine. Try using Tamiya's TS-36 Flourescent Red. It has a gloss finish straight from the can. It is better to airbrush it though to get good color density.

Keep in mind, the flourescent of the Tamiya will disapear quickly and leave you with red.

Gunze fluorescent series is brutal
maximum coverage, extra shine, very tough
try and you wont use any other any more

From a personal point of view I really don't rate Tamiya TS-36 very highly. It's very thin and takes an age to get a nice colour density and I have found over time that it looses it's colour and can also crack.Zero's McLaren red is a much better alternative or the Gunze stuff as already mentioned would be my choice.Plenty of clear coats are needed as the paints do soak up the clear as 935k3 already said.
