The Vr-4 is just the top model.
There's the base model (fwd, least available options, in the 97+ they were 161hp, etc).
Then there's the SL model (fwd, a few more options available, in the 97+ they were 218hp, etc)
And the Vr-4 model was AWD, and only available in manual transmission (5spd for 91-93, and 6spd for 94-99). They also had a twin turbo engine, and made roughly 320hp, and had every option you could ever think of, and then some.
they're just making fun of you because they're idiots. The SL model is a GREAT car to start off with, especially at 18 as your first car. The Vr-4's are expensive to buy, and expensive to fix. If you aren't mechanically savvy, I'd recommend just staying with your SL, as the Vr-4's tend to be maintenance hogs.
Enjoy your car!! They're probably just jealous that your car is nicer than theirs :)

There's nothing wrong with your SL. 220 hp is plenty for most everyone. Anyone saying it's crap is an idiot.
Now, that said...if you get bored of the SL and want some more power, there are plenty of power upgrades you can do to your SL, you dont need to get a VR-4, unless you really want or need the AWD.

Don't the VR4's also have V8's and RWD instead of FWD? :D
