1995 3.4 engine surges badly when cold

Hello from Jackson TN., first post.

I have a 1995 Cutlass Supreme Convertible with 26,000 actual miles. My problem is when cold starting the engine revs high when first started (kind of scary with a cold engine) then revs up and down (high to normal not slower) until it gets warmed up a little. Ideas please This is one of these deals where a mechanic will replace lots of stuff until he get's it $$$$$$$.

I'd first check for vacum leaks, especialy around the air intake.

Could be your Idle Air Control Valve- IAC is dirty/clogged passages. Might try cleaning it and the TB.
I would also check/test the wiring to the IAC and Mass Air Flow sensor- MAF.

The most common cause for this is the lower intake manifold gaskets are leaking vacuum. When they get old, they shrink and leak vacuum. When the engine warms up, idle will stabilize.

i think mod just said the same thing about vaccum leak.

Well it quit doing it. Don't make me mad at all, just puzzled. Thanks for the suggestions, really don't think it is gaskets, having the same weather etc.. seems like a gasket is either there or not assuming a reasonable ambient temp range.

The car hardly gets driven average is 2000 miles a year.
