89 S10 Blazer 4.3L Distributor?

I can't get this truck to idle at 0 degrees when I try to time it. I did unplug the ESR wire (think thats what its called) when I was timing it. This truck has had the intake gaskets replaced on it and I think it got messed up when they installed the distributor. Does anyone know a way to insure it installed right? A good right up? I found on for the Blazers with HEI but not one for the older distributor like this one.

Here is a excellent write up by drdd with pictures in the How to do section of this forum named How to find TDC and set distributor and rotor when engine has been out:

Look at this site it may help:

timing procedure:

Remove #1 spark plug and place a rag over #1 spark plug hole and turn engine with wrench on crankshaft harmonic balancer bolt, when the rags is blown off the engine or you hear a burst of air from the clyinder it means you are on compression stroke. Once you are on #1 compression stroke turn the crankshaft until the timing mark on the harmonic balancer is lined up with the 0 degree mark on the timing cover timing indicator. Then check to make sure the distributor rotor is located at the #1 spark plug wire terminal on the distributor cap. It is possible that the distributor is a tooth off either way. When the distributor is removed for any reason the distrubtor shaft turns, not sure on direction as its been a while since I removed one but I think it rotates counterclockwise as you remove the distributor from engine.

Hope this helps
