Steering system problem

Hi Gurus:

This time I have a new problem I hope you can help me with.

A couple months ago, I was driving, late at night, when the main belt got broken, due to a faulty tensor, well, I managed to drive my GC 2002, 3.3L around 10 miles in that condition, no assisted brakes, no assisted steering, close to overheating, etc, until I arrived home, where I put everything back and check battery and liquids levels including steering wheel (most of it out of the reservoir)

Since then, I've noticed that sometimes the sterering sytem makes a sound like purring (PRRRRRUUUU) for a few seconds, just when I move the steering wheel, and later desapears. (It may be steering pump cavitation due to air in the system?)

5 days ago, in the cold, there was no noise nor steering power, the steering wheel was difficult to move, and a couple seconds later, worked O.K.

I remembered reading somewhere that the way to purge the system is to move the steering wheel from side to side a couple times, which I did, but the noise is still there.

My question is how to purge the system the right way to try to solve this problem or should I check some other place instead?

Is it possible there's some damaged to the system? how can I diagnose it?

As always thank you for your help.
