im working on a 84 model thomas built school bus and the problem that is occuring is that when it is put in gear the motor stalls and turns off. it is an automatic tansmission and im thinking it might be the locking torque converter? any input or advice on how to diag this problem further would be greatly appreciated...

Would be nice to know what engine and trans it has and does it stall in drive and reverse, and does this trans have a lock up convertor, lots of info is missing here!

Thomas was the coachbuilder that built the body and interior. The chassis, suspension, engine, trans etc were all built by a truck manufacturer. We would need to know what maker that is. Likely the grille, hood etc should have the maker's name.

If it is just not a normal stall condition that can be adjusted by setting the idle speed, than something is locked up in the trans.
