I just bought a '96 Jeep Cherokee 4.0 High Output straight 6, when we were changing the rear brakes we noticed that the old brakes had a threaded rod with them to adjust them but the new brakes we bought didn't have it. I was wondering if anyone else has the same thing on theirs? And what kind of brakes then do i have to buy?

I haven't had to change the brakes on my Cherokee yet, but I think you are talking about the self adjuster. You will need to thread it all the way in and intall it with the new brake shoes. There should be an inspection hole to thead it back out once the drum is back on. It will stay adjusted properly either by pulling the e-brake or backing up and stopping, I'm not sure how it works on Cherokees.

As said above, the self adjuster mechanism (the threaded rod with the adjuster wheel thing, and the short piece of cable) is re-used when you install new brakes on the back.
Look here for some tips.
